OUR HISTORY
The Renaissance Bali Uluwatu Resort & Spa is not ancient, but part of the larger Renaissance Hotels brand, which began in 1981 and was acquired by Marriott International in 1997. The Bali location specifically opened on May 2, 2018, making it the first Renaissance Hotels property in Indonesia. Its history is tied to its modern opening, location, and integration of local Balinese culture and sustainability into its operations.
- Brand history: The Renaissance brand itself is relatively modern, originating in 1981 as a luxury brand of Ramada Inns. It was later sold and eventually acquired by Marriott International in 1997.
- Uluwatu location: The Renaissance Bali Uluwatu Resort & Spa debuted on May 2, 2018, as the first of its kind in Indonesia. It is situated in the Uluwatu area, known for its five-star resorts and views of the Indian Ocean.
- Modern history: The hotel’s history is more recent, focusing on its design and operational philosophy rather than an ancient past. It is built with an emphasis on social, cultural, and environmental experiences, such as incorporating local textiles, handicraft activities, and sustainable landscaping.
- Integration of local culture: The resort’s history includes its efforts to integrate with and promote local Balinese culture through its design and guest activities. Examples include showcasing Double Ikat fabrics, offering Tri Datu bracelet making, and hosting events that highlight local traditions.

Guided by talented local artisans, you’ll learn the essentials of shaping, molding, and decorating your own ceramic pieces—from bowls and cups to small art objects infused with your personal style. Each creation is kiln-fired on-site, giving you a beautiful, durable keepsake to bring home.
